The Apple LogoOk, so it isn't open source, but it is taking a step in a positive direction. The new version of iTunes for Mac and Windows unveiled what Apple called "iTunes Plus," music without digital rights management (DRM). Previously, Apple had promised that the unrestricted tunes would go on sale before the end of this month and they have... just.

At the moment only EMI tracks will be available without DRM, that includes artists and groups such as Nora Jones, Coldplay, the Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd. Hopefully, other music labels will cotton on and take the plunge into the realms of fairness.

As I type this my MacBook has just informed me that I have updates waiting, one of those being iTunes 7.2... it has now finished installing and it doesn't appear that any of the DRM free music is available. Perhaps it is US only at the moment. Now all we need is for Apple to officially support ogg vorbis, not likely to happend any time soon/ever, but we can hope Laughing
