A fantastic RTS. This game was originally closed source, but after a petition the source was released to the community to flourish. Warzone 2100 was a pretty revolutionary RTS when it was originally released. Back then it was proprietary software created by Pumpkin Studios and published by Eidos. After Pumpkin closed down and Eidos decided to stop producing the game, a petition to open source it was started. Much to Eidos's credit, they did and the wz2100 project was born. Version 2.0.7 has just been released today and amongst the new features are: - Access to the new Lobbyserver (When joining a game, leave the IP field empty to get a list of available games)
- Screenshots are now saved as PNGs for better quality
- Configurable framerate limit (eg. for laptop users)
- Linux AutoPackage should work better
- Crash and security fixes
There is also a universal mac binary available with this release! Something eagerly awaited by mac users, the last release (2.0.6) only had a build for the PPC architecture and it didn't work on Intel machines. This release fixes that by adding xcode project files to Warzone, this should also make it easier for mac users to compile it themselves. Unfortunately, the original videos and soundtrack were not released, whilst a new soundtrack has been created, the videos introducing each mission have not, so the single player mode of the game does suffer slightly. However, the multi-player still works as well as it ever did and that is by far the best part of the game. Playing online is fantastic, but a skirmish against the AI isn't too bad either. The graphics do look a little dated now and the sound effects could use a little improvement; though I do like the music. However, none of these things really subtract from the fantastic gameplay. The basics are similar to most RTSs, collect resources (in this case oil), build a base, build units, attack the enemy. The unit building process is pretty impressive, you must first design your unit, there are over 2000 possibilities each with its own unique strengths and weaknesses. Once you have built research stations you can progress through the tech tree and eventually build flying units (VTOLs). There is a myriad of maps available, from those with massive amounts of oil so you can get straight in to the action, to those where fighting for oil is the most important part. Massive maps, tiny maps and everything in between and creating your own is pretty straightforward. Now the game is open source new features are being proposed and added with every release... it just keeps getting better!
